SEASIDE CELEBRATING 3 YEARS September 20 2017

Artist Mark Kerckhoff September 13 2017

Seaside welcomes Mark Kerckhoff to our Gallery of Artist.

Mark Kerckhoff is best known for his unique brush handling, powerful, painterly compositions and striking color choices.

Mark is a self-taught, Southern California, landscape painter.

Common themes found in Mark’s work are coastal cliffs, oak landscapes, and desert arroyos and still lifes.

The base of his interest in landscape painting stems from growing up in rural Los Angeles County, and the families’ ranch on the Central Coast.

Mark spent his youth, raising game birds, and riding horses through the cactus-strewn, chaparral hills above his home.

Inspired by the old and modern masters, Mark executes paintings that embrace his love of color and drawing, high aesthetics and craftsmanship.

Seaside Artist Kathy Worden September 07 2017

Gyotaku Artist
Kathy Worden

Gyotaku (Japanese 魚拓, from gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing") is the traditional Japanese method of printing fish, a practice which dates back to the mid-1800s.

This form of nature printing may have been used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own.

Using this printing technique, Seaside Gallery & Goods Artist, Kathy Worden, captures the beauty of sea life from our own Newport Beach, California waters.   Inspired by seeing a gyotaku print of a friend's award winning tuna hanging in their home, Kathy became intrigued with learning the art of gyotaku. She enjoys making impressions of sea life and other inspirations from nature.  Her beautiful gyotaku art work can be purchased at Seaside Gallery and is the perfect compliment to any coastal home or gift for that fish lover in your life.

Artist Esther J. Williams September 05 2017

We welcome guest artist Esther J. Williams to our Seaside Gallery and Goods Collective.

Biography of Artist Esther. J. Williams

Esther’s involvement in art has spanned over 50 years.  She was born in Binghamton, NY in 1955.   She focused on art throughout her early educational years, by drawing with any medium she could grasp between her fingers.  As a very young child she felt the urge to draw on everything, so her father asked the local butcher for clean wrapping paper for his artist daughter. She would draw too her heart's content on that butcher paper with big bold strokes.   When she was eight years old in 1964, she designed a poster for a Calif. Department of Motor Vehicles contest; it won her first place statewide.  While in her senior year of high school in 1973, she was offered a scholarship to the Calif. College of Arts at Oakland, thanks to her art teacher.  Instead, there was a seven year marriage to her first husband and having two sons.  By 1980 she began formal studies in art at Tompkins Cortland-Community College (TC-3) in Dryden, New York.  She studied both architectural design and fine art.  She received her A.A.S. Degree in 1982. She spent another year studying art and art history at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland in 1982.  She moved to Los Angeles in 1983 to study fashion design at The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM).

Trying to balance her role as a mother forced her to take a long sabbatical. She retained her creative spirit and became self-motivated in her learning of art.  She lived in Washington, D.C. for five years spending many hours studying the masters in the museums. In 1987 she returned to California for good. She remarried and now has two daughters also. She has entered into many juried exhibitions and won various awards.  She is in three art associations, has accelerated her awareness of the plein air and California, plus French impressionism style by continuing to paint among modern signature and established artists.

MEET COLLECTIVE MEMBER - ELIZABETH JAMES FROM PACIFIC AND ROSE June 10 2017

Elizabeth James founded Pacific & Rose Textiles in 2001 after discovering the ancient art of hand block-printing while traveling through India. Immediately smitten with the colorful Indian fabrics, she was inspired to produce her own collection of block-printed products including table and kitchen linens, pillows and scarves. Next fall, quilts, shams & curtains will round out the line.

“Working from my Costa Mesa studio, my design recipe combines traditional Indian Mughal motifs and lots of fresh color with a hint of West Coast vibe.  I design in various ways, but my favorite method is to utilize my collection of over 500 vintage wooden blocks for inspiration. I’ll print the blocks and then redesign the results by resizing, reworking and combining them in new ways to create something original."

"Traveling has been a huge inspiration for me. Ever since graduating in Art & Art History from the University of Iowa, I’ve been traveling all over the world. Europe – both east and west, Northern Africa, India, Nepal, Thailand, Mexico, Guatemala, Canada, the US…they have all shaped my design sensibility. I developed a deep love of global textiles that I feel has become part of my design DNA, and my textile company gives me an outlet to express that – a travel journal on fabric so to speak."

"My designs are sent to my workshop in Jaipur, India where skilled artisans carve the printing blocks by hand. The highlight for me is traveling to India to oversee the color mixing and sample making. A collection takes a minimum of 12 weeks to produce as master printers meticulously block-print everything by hand.  Each piece I design includes intricate borders. It takes additional planning and more work when printing, but the results are beautiful."

"Being a part of Seaside Gallery & Goods Collective has given me a unique opportunity to have a brick and mortar retail presence.  My fellow members are owners of creative businesses who generously share their individual strengths and skills with the Collective. Being able to draw on this deep well of experience and creativity helps me to grow and improve my own business. But best of all is the camaraderie and friendship between us that has enriched my life in so many ways.

MEET COLLECTIVE MEMBER - CARLYN CIRILLO June 01 2017

Carlyn grew up loving the ocean, so much so, that she pursued her degree in Marine Biology. After working a few years with Marine Mammals, she and her husband Steve decided to start a family and raise some mammals of their own. Several years later now, Steve is a successful contractor and Carlyn is a stay at home mother of five, yes, that is right, FIVE children.
The Cirillo family has always loved to travel to different beaches and while walking the shores, they began to collect driftwood. They found beaches filled with driftwood and soon were collecting truck loads full of these wayward trees. The unique beauty of each piece sparked Carlyns creative side and soon this became her creative outlet. It was a perfect way to create while spending time with her precious family.
Her talents include hand crafted mirrors, sea horses, stars, hearts and so much more.
Carlyn began selling her work at local craft fares and boutiques until she became one of the flagship members of the Seaside Gallery and Goods in 2015.
She loves to have a place where she can sell her coastal home décor and be a part of a collective where, she is surrounded by so many talented, energetic and supportive artists.
When Carlyn walks in the room, there is a sense of calm. She runs her business, in an effortless fashion, which shows in her beautiful work and products in her little shop here at Seaside.
We look forward to seeing you.

Meet Collective Member - Maureen Madigan May 06 2017

Maureen Madigan lives in Newport Beach along with her husband Nick.  They are empty nesters now that their three children are all away at college.

Originally from Los Angeles, Maureen attended UC Berkley for four years attaining her degree in architecture.
Maureen worked for ten years in various firms in Orange County before starting a family.

She has been an artist for as long as she can remember and has enjoyed painting with a love for design. Her architecture background has been a solid foundation for all design that she approaches.  Maureen has enjoyed painting landscapes,   seascapes, and houses and loves architecture, interior design and graphics.

Maureen loves volunteer work and is President of the Decorative Arts Society in Newport Beach which hosts an educational lecture series on the decorative arts.  This organization that Maureen has been involved with for over 20 years raises money for 12 charities through memberships and underwriting. Maureen says she “loves being involved with Seaside Gallery and Goods as it gives me a chance to try different painting styles. I have met so many lovely people and it is truly a unique store for Newport Beach”.

We certainly agree with that!

Meet Collective Member - Ilona Martin May 06 2017

Meet artist and Seaside Gallery and Goods Collective member Ilona Martin.

Where do you live?
I live on Lido Island in Newport Beach.

What is the name of your business?
Ilona Martin and Art & Treasures.

What type of business do you have?
I am a Painter of Seascapes and Landscapes, plus I enjoy collecting vintage items from my around the world travels to share at the gallery. I love painting in Provence, Hungary and Vienna while visiting my sisters. Carmel is where I often go to paint and show my work.

When and why did you start the business?
Coming from a pressure filled business life ten years ago, painting and travel gave me the mix of calm and adventure.
Living in Carmel exposed me to so much art which inspired me to paint. My first class at LCAD (Laguna College of Art and Design) in 1984, started a journey that was so fulfilling. I continued taking classes with Marylin Poliquin a wonderful painter, who gave me lesson's for year's. Marilyn pushed me to paint my way, since perspective eluded me in my paintings.

What do you want people to know about your business?
The business of painting is based on love of the craft and the continued journey to keep learning and improving my skills. Living next to the Pacific ocean awakens my soul to the rhythm of the waves, the blues, grays and greens permeate on my canvases creating impressionistic paintings.

What is something most people don’t know about you?
That I was born in East Germany and luckily made my way to America to be blessed with family and friends. That I like to whistle as I walk. Giving back is a large part of my life, volunteering as a board member for Hoag Hospital, Laguna Playhouse, Laguna College of Art & Design, Arts Council of Monterey, Hemingway Society and LAPAPA. Annually I plan a "Paint the Village" event June 3rd and 4th in Carmel to raise funds for art in public schools in Monterey County.

What do you like most about being a part of a collective?
Just as collective suggests, being part of a group with a common goal of sharing ideas and offering varied items from each member.. I feel very lucky to be part of such a wonderful group of women.

What do you want people to know about Seaside?
That our mission is to create a wonderful place for our neighbors to come and shop for those special items not found elsewhere. To support a fine group of entrepreneurs who are interested in each customer and enjoy engaging with them on their visit to Seaside.

Ilona Martin is truly a treasure and we at Seaside Gallery and Goods are most fortunate to have her in our collective. She brings an incredibly positive energy, always willing to go above and beyond to help others. Her day begins with asking, how she can serve others. She is a mentor to all of us.

Meet Collective Member - Honey Hostetler April 24 2017

Honey Hostetler, an Idaho native and member of our Seaside Gallery and Goods Collective, has lived in Newport Beach with her husband Cliff for over 50 years.  Honey has always been creative and enjoys needlepoint, embroidery, quilting and even calligraphy.  About 7 years ago, at the age of 74, Honey took a 3 day oil painting workshop in Coeur d Alene Idaho while on summer holiday with family.  The art teacher was very encouraging and gave her confidence in her hidden talent.  This opened up a whole new passion in Honey’s life.   She has continued to develop her craft by taking additional classes and workshops in both Idaho and Southern California.  Although she paints serious landscapes and still life, she also loves to paint animals with a humorous touch.  She loves painting dogs and has done numerous commissions for those wanting to honor their cherished pet with a portrait.  Honey joined Seaside Gallery and Goods in June of 2016 and loves the creative camaraderie, wonderful customers, and the support and friendships she has found here.  All of us at Seaside enjoy having Honey with us and we know once you meet her, you will immediately sense her warm and kind heart as we all do.

Meet Collective member, Denise Buczek of Succulent Style April 13 2017

Where do you live?  Dana Point, CA

What is the name of your business?  Succulent Style

Tell us a little bit about Succulent Style?

Succulent Style offers fresh and long-lasting succulents designed in containers that compliment the overall arrangement.  Succulent Style creates and sells succulent arrangements at Seaside Gallery & Goods for both indoors and outdoors, offers custom arrangements and teaches a succulent design workshop to inspire others.

When and why did you start the business?

I started Succulent Style over 4 years ago due to my love of interior design and nature.  I was seeking a way to have a flexible business that would allow me to bring my love for succulents to the forefront and create beauty in our homes, gardens and lives.

What do you want people to know about your Succulent Style?

Succulent Style is really a way of life.  From the simplicity of a single succulent in a beautifully crafted pot to a family of succulents nestled together in a larger arrangement.  Nature reminds us that we are nourished by the most basic of elements.  I'm inspired by the calming palettes of succulents, particularly the blues and celadon greens which remind us of coastal living by the sea.  I really enjoy working with others to create a custom design for their indoor/outdoor living spaces and teaching others through my workshops about the basics of creating 'stylish succulent' arrangements.

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I have been self-employed as a government contracts consultant for 20 years working mostly with high-tech clients throughout the US.  Succulent Style is my welcomed haven away from the daily desk grind.  I have three golden retrievers, share my life with a man who can really cook and I dig Southern Rock music.

What do you like most about being a part of a collective?

I feel so fortunate to be a part of the Seaside collective and culture!  I have found such inspiration and supportive friendships with these individuals as we have worked to build Seaside since September of 2014.  Sharing responsibilities together creates a flexible environment for us all.

What do you want people to know about Seaside Gallery and Goods?

Seaside is my 'go to' place for unique gift items for family, friends, my home (and me).  The collective members put so much time and attention into their offerings and it really shows.  The store is an inspiration and makes you want to just pull up a chair and have a cup of tea or glass of wine, which is not uncommon.  The charming Pelican Courtyard behind Seaside allows us the opportunity to have amazing community events and gatherings for which we are fortunate to host.
